How tie-breaks work

Tie-breaks are for situations where two or more players have the same points (number of wins) at the end of the competition and their place needs to be split to decide a medal. As tournaments have to be run in a tight time period play-off matches are only used as a last result. For consistancy the same tie-break rules are used for all competitions unless stated otherwise. Positions are only resolved for medals and not for Pentamind points.

If everyone has played everyone else on the same score then the results between opponents will be used as if it was a play-off game. Swiss movements are only being used to allow everybody to carry on playing. This means that the first person to lose a round in a Swiss movement is postioned last in the tie-break. Next the player with the lowest board count (ignoring round 1) wins the tie-break. This is because the lower the board number supposedly the tougher the opponent. The next tie-break is used for games where points can be scored in each turn in the game this is the points difference accumulate in the matchees. The next condition is points scored by the player. The final criterion to use is sum of opponents scores.

If none of the conditions in the previous paragraph can resolve the positions of the players then the players will have a mini tournament. If the players have played in the tournament then the colours (starting order) will be the reverse of their last match. If this does not split the players then a coin toss may have to be used to decide who takes the medal but both players will be accorded equal position. The Organisers have the option to give a descretionary medal to any player in the tie-break and would normally do this before any coin toss. All cash prizes are not tie-breaked but are shared equally amongst the players on the same score.

At any stage during resolving a tie-break a player can elect to concede the result and as long as no impropriety has taken place to influence the player descision the Mind Sports will accept that result. If both players agree and it causes no other conflict in the timetable or presentations then they can chose to have a play-off.
